It was the night before the investor's pitch...

And I'm seriously about to lose my nerve. It 11:22 pm on the 6th September 2009, and in just over 13 hours 4 months of intense competition will be drawing to a close. Since May, I have been competing in a competition for young entrepreneurs here in Northern Ireland, aptly titled Business Bootcamp; aptly because of the many days and nights spent working on assignments through to the early hours of the morning. At 10:00 am tomorrow in Carrickfergus, a town about 20 mins by train from Belfast (my home city), I will be pitching my business idea to a panel of judges for the chance to win a week's training and networking in the Nova Scotia World Trade Centre (WTC), business funding and a year's mentoring from an already successful entrepreneur. A lot to be gained if all goes well tomorrow. And a lot to lose if it doesn't!

I first thought about starting my own business, a digital media company, about 2 years ago when I was 17. Ever get a great idea though, and just push it out of your head? Happened to me lol. I mean, I'm not your average entrepreneur. I eat, breathe and sleep media. I'm a geek. In school I was the kid who would sit in reading manuals on Final Cut Pro and tediously editing videos while all the other girls were picking an outfit for the disco that night. Plus, I've never studied business in my life, and I failed GCSE Maths twice. You would think you'd need to have a good grasp on numbers to be in business wouldn't you? According to my advisors, no: that's what accountants are for!

So if tomorrow goes well, every person who has ever put off the thought of starting their own business because they don't have the "right" pedigree will no longer have an excuse. It will be a victory for the numerically illiterate! So wish me luck. If I pull off it off, you can too.
